The Coastal style developed from the Cape Cod style. Identifying characteristics include a symmetrical appearance with front covered entry at the center of the house, multi-paned double hung windows, and shutters. The roof is a simple gable design with a steep pitch creating enough room for second story living space under the roof line. Window or shed dormers are added to make second-floor living more comfortable. The exterior of the home is wood framed with lap, shake, wide clapboard or shingle siding. Coastal plans are designed with the heart of the home in mind featuring a front porch, large open floor plan, fireplaces, ample windows and the master on the main floor.
